Coordinate drilling machine (Model: FD-V1)
Application of coordinate boring machine
Coordinate boring machine is also known by its English name: Multi spindle drilling heads machine. Or drill-layout machine, jig borer, jig-boring machine. This is an automatic machine, a specialized processing machine made to drill and bore precise holes on machine parts.
The drill has multiple heads that allows drilling, tapping or chamfering multiple heads at the same time, helping to shorten machining time and improve productivity. This is an automation solution for mass production. With just one drilling session, the number of holes drilled can be from 2, 3, 4 to 12 holes at different coordinates. With machining time for each part, cycle time is calculated in seconds.

Product description
Coordinate drilling machine (Model: FD-V1) is a mechanical processing machine specially designed for drilling, reaming, and optionally tapping various types of workpieces. With the ability to configure hole positions, machining depth, and the number of spindles according to specific requirements, the machine is well suited for applications requiring multiple holes to be machined with high positional accuracy and consistency. Depending on the characteristics of the product, the machine can be equipped with either a fixed multi-spindle drilling head or an adjustable multi-spindle drilling head. These configurations are suitable for both mass production of products with fixed specifications and machining of parts where hole positions need to be adjusted. In addition, the machine features a rigid and robust structure, an automatic clamping mechanism, and a compact drilling head. It can also be integrated with an automatic workpiece feeding system to increase productivity, reduce manual operations, and optimize production efficiency in mechanical processing lines. In the following article, CNC VINA will introduce the key advantages of the Coordinate drilling machine and important considerations for its operation.

Structure of automatic coordinate drilling and boring machine
Drill heads are quite diverse in terms of function, there are types that only drill, there are types that both drill and tap, there are types that specialize in tapping, there are types that combine both drilling and boring...
According to structural characteristics, coordinate drilling heads are divided into 2 types:
- Fixed multi-bit drill head: The drill bits will not be able to change position but will be fixed exactly according to the coordinates. This type of head has the advantage of being cheap, durable and accurate and is often chosen for mass processing with a fixed product model. Workpiece materials with high hardness such as S35C, S45C steel...
- Multi-bit drill head with adjustable position: this drill head allows the position of each bit to be changed within a certain limit, helping to machine many similar types of parts. Common machining materials have low hardness and are easy to process such as: Aluminum, copper,...

Some types of multi-bit drill heads and automatic machines for coordinate drilling and boring applications
Advantages of coordinate boring boring machine
- Can change drilling coordinates and drilling depth depending on the detail shape.
- The compact drill head adjusts the stroke with compressed air, so the machine is very mobile.
- Fast cutting speed suitable for large batch production.
- The machine has a solid structure with automatic clamping that will ensure accuracy for the machined parts.
- The machine is built in accordance with the product design and required capacity.
- With the characteristics of each product, the machine can be designed and manufactured according to vertical and horizontal drilling applications. Drilling from top down, drilling from bottom up... Combined with automatic bar feeding systems , helps improve productivity.
Operate coordinate boring machine
The Coordinate drilling machine with an adjustable spindle head is designed to support high-precision hole machining while optimizing operation and handling for users. However, to ensure stable machine operation, maintain machining accuracy, and extend equipment service life, operators should follow several important requirements during use.
Inspect the coordinate drilling and reaming machine before start-up
Before operating the machine, check the power supply, compressed air supply, air pressure, and auxiliary systems. Also inspect the lubrication oil, coolant, and machining area. Make sure there are no obstacles or unnecessary tools within the machine's moving range.
Select the appropriate cutting tools
Drills and reamers should be selected based on the hole diameter, workpiece material, and required machining accuracy. The spindle speed, feed rate, and cutting depth should also be set appropriately for each material and cutting tool. Using inappropriate machining parameters may increase heat generation, accelerate tool wear, or negatively affect the surface quality of the machined holes.
Check the spindle head position
For machines equipped with adjustable spindle heads, the position of each spindle head must be checked accurately before machining. After adjustment, the spindle heads must be securely fixed in place. The cutting tools should be properly centered and securely mounted to minimize runout during rotation.
Perform a trial run before switching to automatic mode
After the workpiece has been clamped and the program has been set, it is recommended to perform a trial run in Manual mode.
The operator should check the following:
- Drilling head travel.
- Machining positions.
- Clearance between the cutting tool and workpiece.
- Clearance between the cutting tool and the JIG or fixture.
- Potential collision risks.
- The machine should only be switched to Automatic mode after confirming that all movements and machining positions are accurate and safe.
Control coolant and cutting tools
- During drilling and reaming operations, an appropriate amount of coolant should be maintained to control temperature and facilitate chip evacuation. Cutting tools should be inspected regularly and replaced when they reach the predetermined wear limit.
- If abnormal noise, vibration, excessive drill wear, or unstable hole dimensions are detected, stop the machine immediately for inspection and troubleshooting.
The coordinate drilling machine provides an efficient automation solution for manufacturers requiring high-precision hole machining with high productivity, especially in mass production. The machine can be flexibly designed to meet the specific requirements of each product, including the number of spindle heads, motor power, and machining configurations such as vertical drilling, horizontal drilling, top-down drilling, or bottom-up drilling. By combining the appropriate drilling head, dedicated JIGs and fixtures, an automatic clamping mechanism, and an automated workpiece feeding system, the machining process becomes more stable, accurate, and less dependent on manual operation. To maintain long-term performance and machining accuracy, manufacturers should select suitable cutting tools, inspect the machine before operation, perform a trial run before switching to Automatic mode, clean the machine after each production shift, and carry out periodic maintenance on the mechanical components, guide systems, drive mechanisms, clamping units, fixtures, and JIGs. With its highly customizable design, the Coordinate drilling and reaming machine is an ideal solution for improving productivity and gradually automating machining processes in modern manufacturing plants.
