Product description

Introduction to automatic carton packaging lines

An automatic carton packaging line is an automated system designed to perform a continuous sequence of operations, including carton erecting, product feeding, robotic product loading, carton closing, and conveying of finished cartons. Depending on the product type, carton dimensions, required production capacity, and available factory space, the system can be configured with suitable machine modules and gripping mechanisms for each specific application. Integrating multiple packaging operations into a single production line helps reduce manual handling, maintain consistent packaging cycles, and ensure smooth synchronization with upstream and downstream equipment. With extensive experience in designing and manufacturing customized automation systems, CNC VINA can tailor the equipment configuration, conveying mechanisms, and control system to meet each customer's actual production requirements.

As industries continue to develop, product packaging has become an essential stage in maintaining product quality and presentation. As a result, carton packaging lines play an important role in modern production and packaging processes. In this article, CNC VINA explores how an automatic carton packaging line operates and the key stages involved in the packaging process.

What is an automatic carton packaging line?

An automatic carton packaging line is a system consisting of multiple machines and equipment interconnected and controlled in synchronization to automate the process of loading products into cartons and completing the finished package. Instead of manually performing individual operations such as carton erecting, product loading, carton flap folding, and carton sealing, these processes are arranged sequentially and integrated into a single automated system.

Machine for building cartons and gluing bottoms in carton packaging line

The carton erecting and bottom sealing machine is one of the important basic parts of the carton packaging line. Furthermore, the machine is highly flexible and can be integrated with other production lines to meet the diverse production needs of businesses. The machine operates completely automatically: cartons are folded and put into the machine to automatically erect and glue the bottom quickly, helping to save time and labor costs. The machine automatically shapes and tapes the bottom of the box to complete the process and move on to the next step of the line. The machine is easily integrated with the production line.

After the carton is erected and its bottom is sealed, the products are conveyed to the loading area. The transfer system picks up the products from the feeding position and places them into the carton according to the predefined loading arrangement. The gripping mechanism is designed according to the product's shape, dimensions, weight, and required arrangement inside the carton. For applications requiring multiple products to be handled within a single cycle, the system can be equipped with multiple grippers to perform product picking and loading operations simultaneously.

Using a transfer system instead of manually placing products into cartons provides better control over product positioning after packaging. The gripping mechanism can also be integrated with sensors and a control system to coordinate with the status of the cartons and conveyors, ensuring stable and synchronized operation throughout the packaging process.

Top carton folding and sealing machine

After all products have been loaded into the carton, the carton is conveyed to the top folding and sealing unit. At this stage, the carton flaps are folded in sequence and securely sealed with adhesive tape to complete the finished package. The machine is equipped with a conveyor system to receive cartons from the previous stage. Sensors can be used to detect the carton position and activate the appropriate folding and sealing sequence. Once the process is complete, the finished carton is conveyed out of the machine through the transportation system.

These are the basic operations involved in carton packaging. Depending on production requirements, these processes can then be integrated into larger packaging operations to form complete palletizing and goods handling systems.

Conveyor system

The conveyor system connects the different stages of the packaging line and is responsible for transporting products and cartons between machine units. Depending on the layout, conveyors can be installed in the product feeding area, loading area, or between the carton erecting and carton closing machines.

The conveyor speed must be synchronized with the operating cycle of the equipment throughout the line. Proper speed adjustment helps prevent product accumulation, carton shortages, and unnecessary waiting between stages, thereby maintaining stable and continuous operation of the entire system.

Depending on the equipment configuration, product characteristics, and line layout, the operating process can be adjusted to suit the specific requirements of each factory. In general, however, the system performs a sequential series of operations, including carton erecting, product feeding, product loading, carton closing, sealing, and conveying of finished cartons. Before starting the packaging line, operators should check the power supply, compressed air supply, conveyor condition, gripping mechanism, carton blank feeding position, and available packaging materials. Parameters such as carton dimensions, picking positions, the number of products per carton, and conveying speed should be configured according to the required production specifications. Once all input conditions are ready, the line can be started and operated automatically according to the preset sequence.

The basic carton packaging process is carried out in the following sequence:

Carton blank feeding → Carton erecting and bottom sealing → Product feeding → Product picking and loading into cartons → Carton flap folding → Carton sealing → Finished carton conveying.

Operating process of an automatic carton packaging line

Carton erecting and bottom sealing

Carton blanks are stacked in the blank feeding area of the carton erecting machine. When the line starts, a suction mechanism or blank picking mechanism transfers individual carton blanks into the forming position. The machine then opens the blank, folds the side panels, and forms the carton according to the preset dimensions. After the carton is formed, the bottom flaps are folded in the correct sequence to prevent misalignment or the bottom flaps from opening during transportation. Adhesive tape is then applied to securely seal the bottom, ensuring that the carton maintains its shape before receiving the products.

Once erected and bottom-sealed, the carton is transferred onto the conveyor and conveyed to the product feeding area. During this process, sensors can be used to confirm that the carton has reached the correct position and is ready for the next stage. If a missing carton, incorrect carton forming, or incomplete bottom sealing is detected, the system can stop or issue an alert for the operator to inspect.

Product feeding and positioning

Products from the previous process are conveyed to the feeding area by a conveyor or suitable transfer mechanism. At this stage, the products need to be arranged in a stable orientation and position so that the gripping mechanism can access them accurately. Depending on the product characteristics, the feeding system may use a single conveyor, sorting conveyor, product stopper, or positioning table. These mechanisms help maintain consistent spacing between products and bring them to the designated picking position. For products that may arrive in different orientations, an additional alignment mechanism may be required before they enter the transfer area.

Product positioning directly affects the accuracy of the picking operation and the arrangement of products inside the carton. If a product is misaligned, overlapping with another product, or facing the wrong direction, the gripping mechanism may fail to pick it up or may place it incorrectly inside the carton.

Product picking and loading into cartons

When both the carton and products are in the correct positions, the transfer system begins the picking cycle. The gripping mechanism moves to the product feeding position, approaches the product, and securely holds it using pneumatic grippers, vacuum suction cups, or a specialized gripping mechanism, depending on the product's shape and material. After picking the required number of products according to the programmed sequence, the transfer system moves to the carton loading position and places the products inside the carton. Products can be arranged in one or multiple layers, in rows, columns, or according to a predefined packing pattern. The placement position must be controlled to minimize contact with the carton walls and ensure sufficient space for subsequent products.

For applications requiring multiple products to be picked within a single cycle, the system can use multiple grippers or simultaneous gripping mechanisms. After each loading operation, the controller updates the cycle status to determine the number of products that have been placed into the carton. Once the required quantity has been reached, the carton is transferred to the closing stage. If the quantity is not yet complete, the system continues with the next picking cycle.

Status check before carton closing

Before moving to the top folding and sealing stage, the system needs to confirm that the carton has received the required number of products and that there are no obstructions around the carton opening. Sensors or signals from the gripping mechanism can be used to verify the completion status of the loading cycle. If the products have not been positioned correctly, the required quantity has not been reached, or the carton is not properly centered on the conveyor, the system can temporarily stop to prevent the carton from being closed before the loading process is complete. This inspection helps minimize issues such as missing products, products becoming trapped at the carton opening, or carton flaps folding incorrectly during the closing process.

Depending on the quality control requirements, the packaging line can be equipped with additional sensors for checking product height, detecting empty cartons, or using cameras to inspect product arrangement before the carton is sealed.

Carton folding and sealing

After the products have been fully loaded, the carton is conveyed to the top folding and sealing machine. At this stage, the carton flaps are guided and folded in sequence to form the complete top closure. The machine folds the carton flaps, stabilizes the carton position, and applies adhesive tape to the sealing area. The tape is pressed onto the joint between the flaps to securely seal the top of the carton. The application pressure and tape position need to remain stable to ensure proper adhesion and prevent the tape from peeling off or deviating from the sealing line.

After sealing, the carton continues through a pressing or roller section if the system is equipped with one. This stage helps ensure that the tape adheres evenly to the carton surface before the carton is discharged from the machine.

Finished carton conveying

Once sealed, the finished carton is conveyed out of the machine through the conveyor system. The conveyor speed is adjusted to match the capacity of the top sealing machine and the requirements of the subsequent process. Appropriate spacing between cartons must also be maintained to prevent collisions or carton accumulation at transfer points. Depending on the factory's production process, finished cartons can be conveyed to an inspection area, checkweigher, labeling station, traceability code printing station, palletizing system, or directly to the storage area. These additional units can be integrated into the line when the factory requires further automation.

During operation, operators should monitor the conveyor condition, adhesive tape supply, carton position, and system alarms displayed on the control cabinet. When a fault occurs, the line should be stopped in accordance with the applicable safety procedures before the cause is inspected and resolved.

CNC VINA's customizable automatic carton packaging lines

Not all products have the same dimensions, weight, arrangement, or carton specifications. Therefore, rather than applying a fixed configuration to every application, a carton packaging line should be designed according to the specific requirements of each factory. CNC VINA can customize the system based on factors such as carton dimensions, product type, required production capacity, product feeding method, number of products per carton, and available installation space. The carton erecting machine, transfer system, conveyors, and carton folding and sealing machine can be arranged according to the actual layout to optimize the movement of products and cartons throughout the line. The control system can also be configured to allow operators to monitor operating status, adjust parameters within the permitted range, and check fault alarms through the HMI. For production lines handling multiple product models, the operating program can be configured for each product specification, provided that the machine configuration meets the required application.

Customized system design gives manufacturers greater flexibility when integrating the packaging line, particularly for factories with limited floor space or those requiring integration with existing automation equipment.

CNC VINA designs and manufactures customized carton packaging lines

For automated packaging projects, the overall performance of a packaging line depends on the coordination between the equipment, products, and actual production process. Therefore, before designing the system, it is important to clearly define the product type, product dimensions and weight, carton specifications, required production capacity, and available installation space.

CNC VINA provides customized automation solutions, from individual machine units to fully integrated multi-stage packaging lines. Depending on the project requirements, the system can combine gripping mechanisms, conveyors, sensors, and control systems to create a synchronized and automated packaging process. For manufacturers looking for an automatic carton packaging line, providing product samples, carton samples, and required production capacity allows the engineering team to evaluate the most suitable mechanical configuration, equipment, and line layout more accurately.

An automatic carton packaging line automates the entire sequence from carton erecting, product feeding and loading to carton flap folding, sealing, and finished carton conveying.
